New Drugs Offer Pain Relief without NSAID Side Effects

Several new types of drugs have been developed that decrease inflammation and therefore rheumatoid arthritis (RA) pain, but do not have the adverse effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs. These drugs were the subject of a recent study by A.A. Schuna and colleagues at a medical center in Wisconsin ("New drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis," American Journal of Health System Pharmacy, 2000;57(3):2259234). "NSAIDs are widely prescribed for RA but are limited by the risk of adverse effects, especially gastrointestinal and renal toxicity," wrote the authors, explaining that these agents work primarily through inhibition...
