Hormone Has Potential Use in Autoimmunity and Transplantation

Researchers reported that a hormone called 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-OH2D3) has a significant immunosuppressive effect. When used with corticosteroids, this hormone also has a synergistic immunomodulatory and steroid-sparing effect. These findings, announced at the 56th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), held in San Diego, California, show potential for use of 1,25-OH2D3 in combination with corticosteroids in autoimmunity or transplantation.
