Diabetes Drug Controversy Mounts



March 31st, 2000

The U.S. government listed another three deaths linked to the controversial diabetes drug Rezulin on March 10, 2000 - bringing the toll to 61 - and is investigating a doctor's allegation that the manufacturer once "coerced" her to downplay the risk.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's newest investigation involving the increasingly controversial drug comes as an FDA physician asked the U.S. Congress to probe why his bosses have not pulled Rezulin off the market.

"I am writing to enlist your aid in convincing my superiors at FDA that Rezulin should be removed from the market because of its unacceptably high risk of causing liver failure," FDA...
