Collagen Synthesis Inhibitor Receives Orphan Drug Designation

Collgard Biopharmaceuticals Ltd., Waban, Massachusetts, announced that it received orphan drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Halofuginone in the treatment of scleroderma. Halofuginone is a specific inhibitor of collagen type I synthesis and is the most advanced in a portfolio of products Collgard is developing to treat disorders, including cancer, restenosis and fibrosis, where tissue trauma and collagen turnover play an important role in the disease process. A topical formulation for the treatment of scleroderma is currently undergoing multicenter Phase II clinical trials in the United Kingdom. U.S. studies are planned to begin...
