The drug, Diflucan, is already being distributed free in South Africa as a treatment for cryptococcal meningitis, an infection of the brain that occurs in 10% of AIDS patients. It also treats esophageal candidiasis, a fungal infection of the esophagus reported in 20%-40% of patients with HIV/AIDS.
