Alzheimer drug effective against vascular dementias

Early drug therapy for most dementia patients may be warranted, even before the type of dementia has been determined, according to a report presented at the American Neurological Association's 127th annual meeting in New York City.

In a 6-month clinical trial, researchers found that an Alzheimer disease drug was also effective in varieties of dementia that involve abnormalities in blood circulation to the brain.

"We found that cholinesterase inhibitors will benefit patients with Alzheimer's disease or vascular dementia, or mixed cases involving both Alzheimer's and vascular causes. This provides further support for treating patients with these drugs...
