Frequency of new type 2 diabetes evaluated in patients taking antipsychotics

An analysis presented at the annual meeting of the Institute on Psychiatric Services of the American Psychiatric Association evaluated the frequencies of newly treated type 2 diabetes in patients treated with antipsychotic medications, including risperidone, olanzapine, Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate), and conventional antipsychotics, compared with patients who did not receive antipsychotic treatment.

A statement from AstraZeneca, maker of Seroquel, said a low percentage of patients in the study who were on Seroquel required treatment for type 2 diabetes.
