Drug safe and effective for the elderly

John Sasaki, MD, director of pain management at Casa Colina Hospital, has presented new research that demonstrates that the sustained-release morphine sulfate pain treatment called Kadian is well tolerated and effective in controlling chronic, non-cancer-related pain in the elderly.

The research was presented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Sasaki's data showed that elderly patients had decreased pain intensity and sleep disturbance with once-daily dosing of Kadian during a 4-week treatment period. The results were based on the analysis of a population subset of 103 elderly patients who participated in the...
