Novel assays facilitate characterization of BACE-1 inhibitors
August 26th, 2005
A pair of novel assay systems facilitate the evaluation of potential BACE-1 inhibitors. "The deposition of beta-amyloid peptides (Abeta 42 and Abeta 40) in neuritic plaques is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer disease (AD)," scientists in the United States explained. "Abeta peptides are derived from sequential cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by beta- and gamma-secretases." "BACE-1 has been shown to be the major beta-secretase and is a primary therapeutic target for AD," noted B.L. Pietrak and colleagues at Merck Research Laboratories. In a recent study, they constructed and evaluated "two novel assays for the characterization of BACE-1...
