Study shows effect of multiple opoids on open-heart surgery patients

In the first reported study on patients using buprenorphine for at least 2 weeks before open-heart surgery with fentanyl-based anesthesia, no overlap of effects occurred between the two opioids, as reported in the Journal of Opioid Management. Patients wearing a buprenorphine patch (Transtec, Napp Pharmaceuticals, Cambridge, UK) for at least 2 months for treatment of chronic pain were compared to patients with no previous opioid use during open-heart surgery.
