Ophthalmic Contact Dermatitis



Sodium lauryl sulfate improves patch test sensitivity

The anionic surfactant irritant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can improve the accuracy of patch tests for ophthalmic contact dermatitis.

"In patients suspected of allergic contact dermatitis because of topical ophthalmic medicaments, patch tests performed with patients' own products are often negative," dermatologists in Italy explained.

SLS "may alter the stratum corneum and increase antigen penetration," noted M. Corazza and colleagues at the University of Ferrara.

In their study, "pretreatment of the skin with SLS 0.5% for 24 h was performed in the sites of patch tests with patients' own products in 15 selected patients."
