West Virginia program aimed at preventing type II diabetes

Health officials are targeting future generations of West Virginians in the battle against obesity and diabetes with initiatives that encourage children and young adults to change their lifestyles.

Through the Program Encouraging Prevention, rural health care providers, pediatricians and schools will be trained to help promote the care and treatment of overweight adolescents ages 10-21 in an attempt to delay or prevent the development of Type II diabetes and risk of cardiovascular problems. The program will focus on those whose weight is at more than the 85th percentile.

A $20,000 grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics will help fund training...
