Investigators at Rayne Institute target obesity and diabetes

Current study results from the report, "A common interleukin 18 haplotype is associated with higher body mass index in subjects with diabetes and coronary heart disease," have been published. "The pleiotropic proinflammatory cytokine, interleukin 18, plays a role in innate immunity and, based on mouse models, influences obesity. We investigated variation within the IL18 gene and its effect on markers of the metabolic syndrome," scientists writing in the journal Metabolism report.
