Federal judge reviews Mississippi hospital charity settlement case

A federal judge has asked attorney Richard Scruggs and Tupelo-based North Mississippi Health Services to strengthen a conflict of interest provision in its settlement of a charity care lawsuit. "When that is done we can promptly move on to other aspects of this case," U.S. District Judge Michael Mills said September 2, 2004, during a hearing in Oxford on Scruggs' motion for preliminary approval of the settlement. Scruggs, who made millions leading the fight against tobacco companies in the 1990s, has sued 40 healthcare systems and nearly 350 affiliate hospitals in 21 states in federal court over healthcare for poor patients. ...
