Gemtuzumab ozogamicin with cytarabine effective in elderly AML patients

A regimen of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) and cytarabine can be effective for elderly acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients.

GO, "an anti-CD33 monoclonal antibody conjugated to calicheamicin, is effective as single agent in the treatment of poor risk" AML patients, oncologists in New York explained.

P.P. Piccaluga and colleagues at Columbia University "treated with GO in combination with cytarabine as continuous perfusion nine elderly AML patients, either untreated (five cases), or with relapsed/refractory disease (four cases)."
