RAC Exploring Possibilities of In Utero Gene Therapy

Although neither the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) nor the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have received any proposals concerning in utero gene therapy, the RAC opened discussions on the ethics of such undertakings in December 1994.

The RAC decided to establish a working group on the subject, and its call for an initial exploration of the state of the subject at a December 1-2, 1994, meeting brought unexpected reports of progress in the area, together with the unsettling prospect of unintentional germ-line gene transfer.
