Alternative Strategy for Particle-Mediated Gene Transfer

Despite continuing difficulties in neuronal transfection that restrict the applicability of molecular approaches to neurobiology, researchers have demonstrated that particle-mediated gene transfer is a method that is relatively simple, flexible and effective for transfecting neurons and glia in mammalian brain slices.

The method results in high levels of expression of reporter proteins in transfected cells, indicated Donald C. Lo and colleagues, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina ("Neuronal Transfection in Brain Slices Using Particle-Mediated Gene Transfer," Neuron, December 1994;13(6):1263-1268).
