Unseparated Freezing of Cord Blood Best for CD34 Enrichment

For purposes of developing a stem cell bank, unseparated freezing of human umbilical cord blood currently is preferable, stated researchers from Germany.

Gesine Kogler and colleagues, Heinrich-Heine University, Dusseldorf, Germany, conducted a study of the Ceprate LC34 Biotin-Avidin affinity system (Cell Pro, Brussels, Belgium) to determine its value in enriching CD34+ cells from fresh unseparated and from thawed unseparated cord blood ("Evaluation of the Ceprate LC34 Affinity System for the Enrichment of CD34+ Hematopoietic Stem Cells from Cord Blood," Blood Cells, 1994;20:371-375).
