Rb Role in Regulating Vascular SMC Is Demonstrated

Researchers demonstrated the role of the retinoblastoma gene product (Rb) in regulating the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC), and their findings suggest an approach using gene therapy for vascular proliferative disorders associated with injury to arteries.

SMC proliferation in response to injury is an important etiologic factor in such vascular disorders as atherosclerosis and restenosis following balloon angioplasty, the researchers noted.

Mark W. Chang and Eliav Barr, University of Chicago, Illinois, and colleagues stated that Rb protein is present in both unphosphorylated and active form in quiescent primary arterial SMCs. ...
