An independent group issued the advice after spending 15 months studying the complex ethical implications and issues raised by biotechnological advances, reported European correspondent Rory Watson ("Europe Cautious over Genetics Trials," British Medical Journal, January 28, 1995;310:213-214).
Watson quoted the advisors as saying, "Because of the important controversial and unprecedented questions raised by germline therapy, and considering the actual state of the art, germline gene therapy on humans is not at the present time...
