"Suicide Gene" Shows Promise Against Localized Gliomas

Suicide gene therapy can induce regression of localized gliomas, according to R. Michael Blaese, M.D., chief of the Clinical Gene Therapy Branch of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Blaese made the remarks to the Subcommittee on Neoplasia.

Patients with gliomas have an abysmal prognosis, Blaese noted. Although responses achieved so far with gene therapy have been transitory, he said he considered these early results encouraging, since there are currently no effective therapies for glioma.

"What we are trying to accomplish is to deliver 'suicide' genes directly to the tumor cell site without affecting normal brain cells," he said in an...
