Genetic Mouse Developed To Treat Blood Disorders

A genetically-altered mouse, capable of mimicking a life-threatening blood disorder, has been developed at the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis.

Researchers in the Wells Center for Pediatric Research have created a mouse model for X-linked chronic granulomatous disease (X-CGD). Their findings are published in the February 1995 issue of Nature Genetics.

CGD is a rare genetic disease observed in children. These children are immunocompromised because they are unable to generate chemicals used by white blood cells to kill invading bacteria and fungi; and they fall prey to life-threatening as well as chronic infections. Typically the...
