According to an abstract presented by the authors to the 2nd National Conference on Human Retroviruses and Related Infections, held January 29 - February 2, 1995, in Washington, DC, "Studies on the regulation of HIV-1 expression by the Rev protein have indicated that the viral mRNAs are defective in the absence of Rev or its binding site on the viral RNA, named RRE. Genetic analysis indicated that multiple inhibitory sequences (INS/CRS) are located throughout the HIV-1 genome in the gag, pol, and env regions.
