APO-E4 Gene Studied

People who inherit a gene associated with Alzheimer's disease may show measurable reductions in brain activity before they show outward signs of the mind-destroying condition, a study found.

The findings suggest that a combination of genetic tests and brain scans with a positron emission tomography (PET) scanner may help identify patients in the very early stages of the disease.

Since gene research in Alzheimer's is still young, the findings won't have an immediate impact on diagnosis, said the lead researcher, Dr. Gary Small of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), School of Medicine.
