Gene Therapy Clinical Trials Underway for Prostate Cancer

Jonathan W. Simons of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine presented information about the first approved human gene therapy trial for prostate cancer at the American Cancer Society's 37th Science Writers Seminar, held March 26-29, 1995, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

According to Dr. Simons, "new therapies for prostate cancer are urgently needed. The metastatic disease inevitably becomes resistant to hormone therapy. In four decades, no chemotherapy or radiotherapy strategy has conferred survival improvement or cure for metastatic disease. Human gene therapy offers promise as a new systemic treatment for hormone refractory prostate cancer."
