Patents Deemed Essential to Next Generation of Cures

Carl B. Feldbaum, president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), issued the following statement in response to a call for an end to gene patents by the Joint Appeal Against Human and Animal Patenting, a coalition of religious leaders organized by Jeremy Rifkin.

"The next generation of modern medicines and cures will never get out of research labs if efforts to halt the patenting of genes are successful.
