Researchers Find Gene Responsible for Some Cancers

Developing a blood test to screen for susceptibility to about 20 percent of colon cancers may be just a few years off since the discovery of a flawed gene linked to the disease, researchers say.

Dr. Sanford Markowitz, cancer researcher at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio, and Case Western Reserve University, said the flawed gene triggers cancer in the right portion of the colon among some patients with an unstable genetic pattern that does not correct itself.

"Their genes are falling apart, rather like a fraying rope," Markowitz said of such families. "You don't get cancer until you fray the specific gene."
