Genetic Mutation Linked to Non-Inherited Cancer Identified

Scientists in the United States and Italy have isolated a new genetic mutation linked to non-inherited colon cancer. Their findings are reported in three papers published in the June 30, 1995, issue of Science.

Researchers from the Instituto di Ricerche di Biologia Molecolare in Rome, Italy, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, independently identified a mismatch repair gene known as GTBP. Investigators from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, Baltimore, Maryland, then linked mutation of the gene to colon cancer.
