This innovative approach is reported in the August 1995 issue of Nature Medicine.
The researchers linked the gene for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-(alpha))-a natural substance which can directly kill tumor cells as well as make them more sensitive to radiation - with the "on-off switch" from another gene, known as Egr-1. The Egr-1 switch is flipped on by exposure to radiation.
