Grant Awarded To Develop Chromosome-Specific Telomere Gene Probes

Oncor, Inc., Gaithersburg, Maryland, announced that it has been awarded a $750,000 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the molecular analysis of human telomeres.

Telomeres cap the end of the chromosomes and are critical for maintaining chromosome structure. Instability in the telomeric region has been associated with aging, cancer and mental retardation.

The changes in structure in this region have been very difficult to study due to their complexity and the normal variation that exists in the population. Oncor plans the development of a panel of chromosome-specific telomere...
