Lung Resistance Protein Predictive of Response in Ovarian Cancer

A newly described protein, the lung resistance protein (Lrp), which is also called the p110 major vault protein, is indicative of response to chemotherapy and long-term prognosis in advanced ovarian carcinoma.

Roughly 75% of the women diagnosed with ovarian cancer present with surgically incurable advanced disease. Chemotherapy after debulking surgery has increased the 5-year survival rate to 10-20 percent. Drug-resistant cancer cells that exist prior to or develop after treatment are likely to be responsible for the high rate of chemotherapy failure.
