Clinical Trial Begins for Malignant Gliomas

A novel gene therapy for patients with malignant gliomas, invariably fatal brain tumors, is being tested in clinical trials at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, New York, and several other sites in the U.S. and Israel.

Each year, approximately 17,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with primary brain tumors (those that originate in the brain). Malignant gliomas, fast-growing and invasive tumors, account for about one third of these cases. Aggressive treatment - surgical removal of the tumor, followed by radiation - often helps to lessen symptoms and improve quality of life, but the prognosis for such patients remains grim.
