Inflammation Gene Isolated

A gene that triggers the swelling, heat, pain and redness accompanying a virus infection has been identified in mice, a finding that could be the first step toward a drug to control inflammation.

Donald N. Cook, a pathology researcher at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), said that his team used a special strain of laboratory mice to find a gene called MIP-1 alpha and to prove that it produces a protein that starts the inflammation process.

Cook said the finding could lead to developing drugs that allow the body to fight viral infections without the damaging effects of inflammation.
