Gene Therapy Boosts the Killing Effect of Antitumor Radiation Therapy

Tumor inoculation with a gene that produces tumor necrosis factor (TNF) enhances the killing effect of antitumor radiation therapy.

Previous experiments have shown that TNF improves tumor control in vivo and enhances the tumor killing effect of radiation. Unfortunately, doses high enough to be effective, are also high enough to cause systemic toxicities.

Ralph Weichselbaum et al. presented data at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Proceedings of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, held October 8-11, 1995, that showed how gene therapy could bypass the problems of systemic toxicity while still providing an antitumor booster...
