"Genetic Engineering of Herpes Simplex Viruses as Therapeutic Agents."

According to an abstract submitted by the author to the Foundations of Leukemia Research: Promise for the Future Conference, sponsored by the Leukemia Research Foundation, held September 14-15, 1995, in Oakbrook, Illinois, "Herpes simplex viruses have a DNA genome containing approximately 80 known genes. We have developed techniques for genetically engineering viruses which contain inserts or from which specific genes had been deleted. Studies on genetically engineered viruses have shown that more than half of the viral genes can be deleted without affecting the capacity of the virus to multiply in human or other mammalian cells in culture.
