According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, held August 20-23, 1995, in Copenhagen, Denmark, "Viral-mediated gene transfer of thymidine kinase of herpes simplex virus (HSVtk) has been used to confer cytotoxic sensitivity to ganciclovir (GCV) in a variety of tumor cells. HSV-tk converts GCV into a phosphorylated compound which is toxic for dividing cells by blocking DNA synthesis.
