According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 30th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, held August 20-23, 1995, in Copenhagen, Denmark, "Viral-mediated gene transfer of thymidine kinase of herpes simplex virus (HSVtk) has been used to confer cytotoxic sensitivity to ganciclovir (GCV) in a variety of tumor cells. HSV-tk converts GCV into a phosphorylated compound which is toxic for dividing cells by blocking DNA synthesis. In rat, diethylnitrosamine (DENA) produces multiple foci of dysplasia, and eventually HCC. This animal model closely resembles the human condition.
