Scientists Engineer Novel Stem Cells for Cancer Gene Therapy

Cell Genesys, Inc., Foster City, California, reported that a team of its scientists has for the first time successfully engineered bone marrow stem cells which can prevent the occurrence of fatal cancers in animals.

Stem cells have been genetically engineered with tumor-specific receptors and successfully transplanted in mice where they produce a variety of immune cells that selectively and efficiently destroy cancer cells. The work was carried out by a team of scientists at Cell Genesys led by Margo Roberts, Ph.D. and was reported at the American Society of Hematology annual meeting, held in Seattle, Washington.
