"Gene Therapy for Brain Tumors by Autologous Vaccination with Engineered GM-CSF Secreting Tumor Cells."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 25th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, held November 11-16, 1995, in San Diego, California, "We have developed an ex vivo gene therapy paradigm for the treatment of brain tumors using granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). The murine B16 melanoma and the GL 261 glioma lines were infected with MFG recombinant retrovirus containing the mouse GM-CSF cDNA. The tumor lines were confirmed to secrete GM-CSF by ELISA. Subcutaneous vaccination of syngeneic mice with irradiated GM-CSF-secreting B16 melanoma cells completely protected animals from subsequent intracranial B16 tumor inoculation. Histologic...
