Published in Gene Therapy Weekly, January 29th, 1996

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 44th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, held November 17-21, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, "We have previously shown that retroviral-mediated transfer of a human multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) gene can protect transplanted mice against taxol-induced myelosuppression, suggesting this approach could be used to reduce hematopoietic toxicity associated with cancer chemotherapy. Our recent work has shown that the MDR1 cDNA contains cryptic splice donor and acceptor sites that result in transfer and expression of a truncated, non-functional provirus.
