Gene Targeting of Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells Possible

Published in Gene Therapy Weekly, February 5th, 1996

c-kit receptor mediation facilitates targeted gene transfer specifically to human hematopoietic progenitor cell lines.

c-kit is a growth factor receptor on hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. It is expressed on murine pluripotential stem cells capable of reconstituting all hemopoietic lineages as well as in human hematopoietic progenitor cells. In addition, its expression is restricted to stem/progenitor cells and is not expressed on its committed progeny except for mast cells.

This presents a unique opportunity to specifically target gene therapy to these cells if an efficient method of transduction could be found.
