Tiny Region of HIV Gene Missing in Long-Term Non-Progressors

A tiny portion of the HIV-1 nef gene is missing in a cohort of people remaining healthy despite long-term infection with the virus.

The so-called Sydney cohort is a group of people infected with HIV via blood transfusions from the same donor.

The blood donor and six people infected by his plasma have remained healthy longer than a decade and even have normal immune systems, Australian scientists report in the November 10, 1995, issue of the journal Science.
