"Retroviral Transfer and Expression of the Human p16IN4A Gene Inhibits the Proliferation of Human Leukemias."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, held October 8-11, 1995, in Miami Beach, Florida, "The 16 kD protein (p16) encoded by the CDK4I/MTS1/INK4A gene binds to cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) and inhibits its kinase activity which is important for phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) to promote cell cycle progression during the G1 phase. Loss of p16 function may allow excessive phosphorylation of pRb, thereby resulting in dysregulation of the cell cycle and uncontrolled cellular proliferation.
