According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 25th Jubilee Conference of the New Zealand Society for Oncology entitled From Genes to Clinical Trials, held February 13-16, 1996, in Auckland, New Zealand, "MUC-1 epithelial tumor mucin is a glycoprotein which is abundantly expressed on a wide range of human adenocarcinomas, including those arising from breast, ovary and pancreas. MUC-1 mucin has been identified as a target for cytotoxic T cells in cancer patients. The aim of our work is to exploit the recognition of MUC-1 mucin by the immune system to develop an effective cancer vaccine.
