Published in Gene Therapy Weekly, April 8th, 1996

By tracking down a long-sought but elusive protein, biologists have for the first time shown that changes in the body's DNA packaging play a key role in turning genes on. This surprises many biologists who have long considered chromatin modification and transcription regulation as separate processes; several scientists expect the finding to cause a redirection in research.

The results and an accompanying review are in the March 22, 1996, issue of the journal Cell.
