Gene Therapy Using HIV Based Viral Vectors on the Horizon

A retroviral vector gene delivery system containing reconstituted HIV is described in the journal Science 1996;272:195,263-268, by researchers who believe this system "... offers hope for successful gene therapy for many life-threatening diseases."

Dr. Fred H. Gage of the Salk Institute and colleagues built on previous research in which "debilitated" HIV was combined with components of another virus to form efficient viral vectors. "Our results lend strong credence to the idea that HIV based vectors transduce genes efficiently and can be used for in vivo gene delivery," Gage said.
