HBV-X Protein Plays a Major Role in the Oncogenesis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Prevention of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may be as simple as a vaccine designed to prevention production of HBV-X protein.

It has been proposed that viral DNA sequences can either act in cis to modify host gene expression or encode viral proteins that may interfere with normal cellular functions either directly or indirectly. A potential mechanism for the neoplastic transformation of hepatocytes by HBV is the inactivation of cellular proteins by viral proteins.
