Retinitis Pigmentosa Gene Located

After a decade of research, scientists have identified the location of the RP3 gene (named the RPGR gene), located on the X chromosome, that causes retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

The study, led by Dr. A.F. Wright, Scotland, Dr. Thomas Meitinger, Germany, and Dr. Michele D'Urso, Italy was announced in the May 1996 issue of the journal of Nature Genetics. The final identification of the RPGR gene was the result of a collaborative effort of three research groups working separately for many years, who at the end joined forces to find the gene more quickly.
