Renal Cancer

Mutated Gene Identified

Scientists have isolated a gene on human chromosome 3 that is mutated in patients with renal cancers, according to a report from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The Institute is affiliated with The Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University.

The gene, called ARP for arginine-rich protein, was identified in chromosomal band 3p21, a region that is frequently deleted in a variety of cancers, including lung, breast, prostate and kidney cancers. All the mutations occurred within one small region of the ARP gene.
