"Protease-Defective gp120-Containing HIV-1 Particles Induce Apoptosis More Efficiently than Wild-Type Virus in Mitogen-Stimulated Healthy Donor-Derived Peripheral Blood Cells."

Published in Gene Therapy Weekly, June 17th, 1996

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 96th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 19-23, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Apoptosis and syncytia formation are two mechanisms whereby HIV impairs uninfected CD4+ T-cell function, leading to pathogenesis and AIDS. Previously, we showed that gp120-containing, HIV protease-deficient particles (L-2) generated syncytia in uninfected CD4+ cultured T-cells. Here, we present evidence that such L-2 particles can induce apoptosis in about 50% of mitogen-stimulated T-cells derived from healthy donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC-T). Activation with PHA or Con A after...
