World's First Program Initiated at UPMC

A 68-year-old woman became the first patient to receive the world's first gene therapy for arthritis, which was performed on July 17, 1996, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh.

The trial marks a transition from the exploration of gene therapy for patients with imminently fatal diseases such as cancer or AIDS to therapy for disabling, chronic disorders such as arthritis. It is the first such study for an autoimmune disorder. It is the first gene therapy protocol for a disorder of connective tissues, which bind together and support various structures of the body.
